About Me

Hans was a busy, happy, sweet and fearless three year old when he was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma. He fought his disease like a "gladiator" for nearly 6 years. Hans was an animal lover to his core. He was 'guarded' at home by his three cats, Black, Orange and Cotton. He also had his Golden Retriever, Honey, to keep him company. Hans enjoyed swimming, biking, gardening, grilling (he had his very own grill!), horseback riding, playing video games, building Legos, and flipping between Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and Animal Planet. Hans loved all members of his family and he was a loyal friend. He had to go through a lot of treatment in his life. But Hans powered through it. His attitude was let's get this done! His motivation was always to get back home, to his family, pets, favorite foods and pool.

I had a really nice "peaceful easy feeling" after our good news. It was amazing. I felt so calm, and peaceful and relaxed and happy. Well, that's sort of moved on. Last night we told Hans the plan (he'd heard it before, but he was really not allowing himself to hear or believe it). He is very upset to the point of pleading with us to do any other kind of treatment. In fact, he just told me to get on the phone with Dr. Marachelian and find another treatment. He then said, "if they make me do that treatment, I'd rather just live with it." Obviously, we feel we've got to go with his best shot. We'll get him through it. It's just a shame that it's so darn uncomfortable. I think Hans wouldn't blink if it wasn't for that foley catheter.

Anyway, some of you have reached out and asked if you could send a package to Hans. Yes! Please, that would be fabulous. I know he is a real toy monger, and it is almost obscene to send him another gift. But the truth is that it would make him feel loved and remembered, help him pass the time, provide a little bit of excitement and help get him through this difficult treatment, so thanks. I just spoke with our Nurse Practioner, she said cards or packages addressed to:

Should get to him no problem. We are planning to likely be there from Tuesday Feb 21, through Tuesday Feb 28th. By a stroke of luck, my mom already had a flight booked for that week to be here during he school's midwinter break. We'll get her Sunday. And Hans and I will head up to SF on Tuesday. Kevin is hoping to come up Thursday, we'll deploy my mom accordingly. Poor Roxie has another patient to tend to next week. Her dad is going in for a surgery today. Wishing Skip luck!

I will aplopgize in advance, I'll try, but I am likely to reach my height of whininess in the coming week. The MIBG is miserable for us, but we are well aware of the potential payoff. (A miracle!) You've been warned - if whiny lady is not your cup of tea, feel free to tune out for a week and a half and rejoin us on about Feb 29th for, hopefully, some joyful banter!

Poor Hans!! My heart breaks for him. But I agree you have to do what's Best for him in the end. He's a Great Trooper and will make it through the week. Everyone here in Texas is still praying for him and your family. Will definately try to send a care package. Thanks for keeping us updated. (I have never met any of you - but feel like I have known ya'll forever. Please let Hans know there are many of us following his journey hoping for the best outcome possible.) I have said this before - but you are an AWESOME mom. Great job!!!

Hoping all of the show of love and care packages, even though he has to leave them behind due to radiation, will get Hansie through another rough treatment. Hard to even think about all he's gone through already - and to have repeat the whole thing so soon, would be hard for anyone. Just have to focus on better days to come.

Tell him a package is on it's way! Hugs and love to you all,

G.Kathy & G.Dale xoxo

Just placed an order from Hans' wish list...easy to tell that it was his and not yours or Ellie's!! :D Prayers will continue for Hans to get through this procedure with optimum speed! Whine all you want, dear Lara. You have paid your dues beyond anything to get to whine to your heart's content!

We love you all!

PS You have to have Hans update that wish list! It's getting short and I didn't see anything on there since 2010 (I hope I found the right one)! And you, Kevin and Elle should add things for yourselves, too! It is a wish list, after all!

Oh Lara, what a dilemma for you! Of course you will do what is right and necessary. I would be happy to make another trip up to UCSF while you are there, now that I know exactly how to do it, and either give you a break or bring you some lunch, or whatever errand you can think of to send me on. The 24th, 25th and 27th are all open right now, so just let me know. You should definitely start your own wish list too, even though we all know that your true wish is for this disease to go away forever. And you are doing all you can to make that happen! As always, sending love and caring, Kim

Have a package is on it's way to UCSF, hoping to help Hans pass the time. I wish this was easier for all of you, but am grateful for the success so far and praying that this next round totally knocks it all out! Lots of hugs and love and prayers for all of you!

Hi Lara,

I'm so sorry that Hans has to go through this again. I couldn't be happier to hear the results of the 1st one. I can tell you that catheter's are always the biggest concern of Tyler's as well. It bothered him the most after surgery and he had so many other tubes that I thought would bother him more! Thinking of you guys always!

With love,

Karen Borges

PS--love the gift idea! We did this with transplant and it helped so much. We aimed for a "gift a day" but ended up with opening a few a day to keep him busy. He loved it and it kept him connected to friends and family (and passed the time)!

Actually, whiny lady IS my cup of tea. :) I'm sorry he has to go through this again, (and you and kev also) Will be thinking of you lots. I'm going to check out that list, see if theres anything left that costs less than what's in my wallet which is 3 dollars and 26 cents. Just kidding. Love you guys. xoJana
