About Me

Hans was a busy, happy, sweet and fearless three year old when he was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma. He fought his disease like a "gladiator" for nearly 6 years. Hans was an animal lover to his core. He was 'guarded' at home by his three cats, Black, Orange and Cotton. He also had his Golden Retriever, Honey, to keep him company. Hans enjoyed swimming, biking, gardening, grilling (he had his very own grill!), horseback riding, playing video games, building Legos, and flipping between Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and Animal Planet. Hans loved all members of his family and he was a loyal friend. He had to go through a lot of treatment in his life. But Hans powered through it. His attitude was let's get this done! His motivation was always to get back home, to his family, pets, favorite foods and pool.

Almost there...

Hey there.
Sorry, I did mean to post a little more often while up here! I should say chillin' up here - brrr it's cold - like 20's/30's in the morning on our brisk 20 to 30 minute walk to CHOP. But, we can deal handle it!

Hans is doing okay. He has finished day 3 of 5 of his irino. His electrolytes have been a little whacked, which makes him listless and we do get a little worried about him. We found out that his Potassium has just dropped low enough to treat. We've also been treating him for low sodium all week. He has lost two pounds up here! Yikes! It makes us pretty nervous when he starts to lose what little reserves he has. He is doing his best to make up for it. He has a favorite chips and salsa restaurant we've gone to several times, he orders mexican rice and sides of steak. He also is asking for more pepperoni pizza, chicken noodle soup and he's drinking a lot of root beer!

Hans likes to know how many more nights we have when we're visiting someplace. Tonight we have 7 more nights in Philly. Yesterday we ventured out a little to see Madagascar 2, and tonight, Hans seriously loved a visit from the Vet Pets - dogs of the employees at Penn Vet School. It was cool that he had a couple dogs to visit for an hour.

We were able to move back in to the Ronald McDonald House yesterday. (the first day we were eligible to be back here.) It's great! I really like it - it makes it much much easier to try to feed a little lion cub with a full service, fully stocked kitchen, than while staying in a hotel.

Thanks to Mayada for putting up flyers for the bake sale all around TCH! Awesome! the bake sale is on friday from 10 - 3 at TCH. And, thanks for everyone who has been able to bake or work the sale...

More later! Love, Lara

Good morning Hans, Lara, and Stephanie! So great to hear that life is moving forward in a positive direction, and that the monitoring is addressing imbalances!
Ronald McDonald houses are truly life savers! It has always been one of my favorite "charities!"
HANS! You need to write a "restaurant review" of Philadelphia! It sounds like you are accumulating some valuable information for your peer group...and Cousin Erin!
CHILLY weather there...and in NM!
Leo the Lion is curled up in my lap, and he was pleased to read that you had canine visitors!
May the 7 remaining days pass pleasantly and swiftly! I am sure the city is celebrating Santa's upcoming visit!
It is still dark here, but I know Buzzy is waiting at the barn eagerly for his carrot, oats, and hay on this CHILLY morning!
Enjoy your day! All of the children in Room 20 and at St. Patrick's church are cheering you on!
Love and hugs,
Aunt Susy

Hey Erin,
We have been going to the college hang out Mad Max for about 2 hours each day... I think Hans is ready for Ivy League - at least the lifestyle. He likes rocking out to their fun tunes. It's on Locust tucked in between Chestnut and Walnut in University City.
Love, Lara

Hey Lara! Sounds like you guys have done a fantastic job up there! Your posts made MIBG therapy seem like a breeze! Glad to hear Hans is well and eating like a champ--he needs to teach that to John sometime. John's just never become a voracious eater and lord knows he could use the calories. I've been a little baking fiend--working on my packaging after watching all the cute stuff from last time. I'll miss seeing you guys up there tomorrow! Take care and have a safe trip home--hugs to Hans!
