About Me

Hans was a busy, happy, sweet and fearless three year old when he was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma. He fought his disease like a "gladiator" for nearly 6 years. Hans was an animal lover to his core. He was 'guarded' at home by his three cats, Black, Orange and Cotton. He also had his Golden Retriever, Honey, to keep him company. Hans enjoyed swimming, biking, gardening, grilling (he had his very own grill!), horseback riding, playing video games, building Legos, and flipping between Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and Animal Planet. Hans loved all members of his family and he was a loyal friend. He had to go through a lot of treatment in his life. But Hans powered through it. His attitude was let's get this done! His motivation was always to get back home, to his family, pets, favorite foods and pool.

Another Day...

This is super-cool Serenity Colon and her adoptive mom, Leigh Ann.

Serenity passed away this evening in the pediatric ICU at Texas Children's Hospital.

We lived two doors down from Reni-Roo for a month during Hans' bone-marrow transplant. This one is hitting our little Ellie pretty hard. Ellie really took to Serenity. Everyone took to Serenity. Serenity had leukemia and received a bone-marrow transplant from her natural mother (not Leigh Ann) last year. Unfortunately it didn't work. For one reason or another Serenity was left to her own devices. Leigh Ann took over as primary care-giver out of the absolute greatness of her heart and with disregard to her personal life and career. Leigh Ann is our super-hero. We have met too many kids that are left alone to deal with cancer for one reason or another. Leigh Ann took the reigns and showed Serenity love beyond all love.

Again...this is two little souls in one week

Give a shout out and a prayer to Leigh Ann and strive to be like her. We'll all be better for it.

Kevin, Lara, Ellie, and Hans

Such sad news about a beautiful little girl. Yes, Leigh Ann is heroic, and so are all of you. If the world was full of people like her and your family, anything would be possible! It's inspiring to see you opening your hearts to so many others when you have so much on your own plates. Here's hats off to your family! Keeping fingers crossed that all your news is good news from now on!
Love,
Kim

Someimes it is hard to keep in mind that God has something special planned for those little angels when they are taken from us. We do not always realize the reasons behind it, but we put our trust in God and try to learn what we can. I am glad to hear that Hans recovered fine from his low sugar. My grandmother battles it hourly and I know that it can be scary at times. He is such a strong little man. Please know that you are all in our prayers. Tonight we will say a special prayer for the little angels that have gone to be with God and the staff at TCH for the daily emotional struggles that I can not even begin to understand.

Always in our prayers and thoughts,
Lillie Harwood

I started to write yesterday and just couldn't. Poor Serenity and I'm so sorry Leigh Ann. It is so hard to understand why things happen the way they do -- especially to our little kids that haven't even had life experiences -- other than the hospital.

I'm so glad for Hansie and I think that there are special reasons why he is doing well and getting stronger all the time. Just know, I am thinking about you, saying (what prayers I do say!)prayers and hoping there is a reason for all this sadness. pl
