About Me

Hans was a busy, happy, sweet and fearless three year old when he was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma. He fought his disease like a "gladiator" for nearly 6 years. Hans was an animal lover to his core. He was 'guarded' at home by his three cats, Black, Orange and Cotton. He also had his Golden Retriever, Honey, to keep him company. Hans enjoyed swimming, biking, gardening, grilling (he had his very own grill!), horseback riding, playing video games, building Legos, and flipping between Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and Animal Planet. Hans loved all members of his family and he was a loyal friend. He had to go through a lot of treatment in his life. But Hans powered through it. His attitude was let's get this done! His motivation was always to get back home, to his family, pets, favorite foods and pool.

"Day Plus 6"

More of the same today... Hans is still having fever. The doctors aren't surprised, they said that as the mucositis breaks down the esophogal lining, it releases bacteria that need to be attacked. He's a really good sport about all of this, he's not whining and complaining much at all. They are upping his hydrocortizone to a stress dose which should help with the fever. In just a few days his white counts should come up and things should look better and better.

I'm a little bit of a freak these days about germs. We've pretty much decided to close the room off to all other visitors. We're even sending my mom, Elle and Aunt Pati to San Antonio for three days. They'll have great fun, and Hans can just get through these days with only our germs to be exposed to! I've never washed my hands this much in my life.

I'm going back home today for Elle's hair appointment. She's donating 10" of her hair to Locks of Love today! I'll post a picture just as soon as I can. I'm pretty proud of her. This experience has been tough on her, but as her teacher, Mrs. Castro, says, "She handles her life beautifully." It's also been endearing how she has opened her heart to other patients and siblings, as well as nurses on the floor. All the time people ask, "Is Elle coming today?" Sorry - just had to take a boastful moment here to recognize Hans' 'big beautiful sissy.'

We are all just as proud of Ellie as we are of Hans. She too has handled this with a grace, wisdom and maturity far beyond her eight years! Can't wait to see the new haircut. She is going to make someone very happy - she has such beautiful hair! XOXOXOXO

Bye, Bye tresses...HELLOOOO NEW HAIR DOOO! Oh, Ellie, you are such a caring little lady!!!! Your hair will make another little lady prance with joy!
You will REALLY enjoy San Antonio...that's where Cousin Erin went to school! I will bet she has a few suggestions regarding sights to see and things to do. Give her a call!
Hansie...you are such a brave boy. In my classroom when students feel like complaining, we have a great BIG group whine: "OHHHHHHHH!" So, we will have one for you tomorrow...LATER, we will share happy thoughts and think about you being frisky with us!
Thinking about all of you with love, Aunt Susy and John

...cousin Erin does have a lot to say about San Antonio... see the Alamo, which is just so important and so great about our country... and walk on the Riverwalk and have ice cream at Marble Slab... then drive off a bit and go to the McNay Museum, which is small and lovely and just southern perfect, and from there drive up to Twin Sisters for fabulous soup and sandwiches, then over to the Quarry and go to Amy's Ice Cream for a milkshake and maybe to the cinema!! Oh have fun. San Antonio is perhaps my most favorite city in the US. I am already incredibly envious even writing about it. Kisses - Erin

Awesome gift for someone without hair, Elle! You'll be just as beautiful with shorter hair and someone else will now be beautiful with your hair.

Hang in their Hans! It'll be fun to see Elle's new hair do, huh?

Love and prayers to all!
