About Me

Hans was a busy, happy, sweet and fearless three year old when he was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma. He fought his disease like a "gladiator" for nearly 6 years. Hans was an animal lover to his core. He was 'guarded' at home by his three cats, Black, Orange and Cotton. He also had his Golden Retriever, Honey, to keep him company. Hans enjoyed swimming, biking, gardening, grilling (he had his very own grill!), horseback riding, playing video games, building Legos, and flipping between Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and Animal Planet. Hans loved all members of his family and he was a loyal friend. He had to go through a lot of treatment in his life. But Hans powered through it. His attitude was let's get this done! His motivation was always to get back home, to his family, pets, favorite foods and pool.

Yesterday's trip to the clinic...

After four and a half straight days "off" at home, we went to the clinic yesterday for counts and a check-up. As we had sort of expected, Hans did need both platelets and red blood cells. His white count was also quite low, so we'll have to shy away from visitors for the next several days until it starts to come back up. We also received his scan schedule for the next month. Hans is going to have a bone scan, another CT, another MIBG -or full body scan- and a bone marrow aspiration this month to look for any remaining tumor cells. We are pretty optimistic about these scans since originally, aside from the large abdominal tumor and the bone marrow, they didn't find much beside some questionable spots in the liver. Dr. Nuchtern felt pretty good about the liver after closely inspecting it during the surgery. I am hoping that the bone marrow sample will now be free of tumor, but our Dr. has assured us that treatment will remain the same even if clumps of tumor are still present there.
He will also have an audoigram, an echocardiogram, a GFR (kidney function test), and a dental exam. For the most part these will compare to his baseline to see if any damage has been done by the chemo he has already received. The GFR will I guess help determine how much more chemo his kidneys can take. We are going to be taking many trips down to the medical center this month. Thankfully, friends seem happy to help out by watching Elle after school. Thanks! I'll keep the blog up to date as these results start coming in.

Lara, You are such a courageous, loving Mom. I am praying for you as well as for Hans, for the strength to keep on holding it all together as you all go forward into these procedures. Let's hope the end is in sight!
Love,
Kim
